But before I jump immediately to the menu ideas and the recipes, I would like to share what Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor once said.

“Labor Day is devoted to no one man, living or dead, to no one sect, no one race, or no one nation.”

I remember reading that statement (no, I wasn’t there) and I remembered it because I thought it was an important thing to say and understand. I really like it.

Labor Day is a holiday for anyone who works to support himself or herself and others. I really like it!

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the achievements of American workers.

In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday in America.

But Labor Day is also observed as a legal holiday in Puerto Rico and Canada.

In Australia, I believe Labor Day is called Eight Hour Day. It celebrates the struggle for a shorter working day.

In much of Europe, Labor Day is observed on May 1 and is known as May Day.

The character of the Labor Day celebrations has pretty much changed over the years, especially in large cities where mass displays and huge parades have proved to be a problem. I miss the parades ...not the speeches. :-)

Although a lot of people do go to restaurants on Labor Day, many people feel like it is the last chance to leisurely cook a meal and enjoy each other’s company before school starts and summer fades away. So here are some suggestions for a Labor Day Menu.

Fresh Homemade Lemonade

Or soft drinks

Chardonnay Wine

Grilled or Roasted Salmon with Lemon Herb Butter

Grilled Vegetable Salad

with Balsamic Vinaigrette

Garlic Bread

or Artisan Bread

Fresh Blueberry Cobbler

Coffee Or a Coffee Nudge

In the spirit of Labor Day, how about serving organic, shade grown coffee,, or some gourmet hot cocoa and all natural pancakes and organic maple syrup for your breakfast?

Enjoy your Labor Day Menu and the company of those you share it with!
