Cookbooks with well-written, reliable recipes are an absolute must for anyone who wants to improve their cooking knowledge and skills ...for everyone who wants to cook with confidence and style.
Welcome to my cookbook page! I have owned a successful small town American-style restaurant for almost two and a half decades. The success of the restaurant in a highly competitive market is in large part the result of having consistent quality food.
Where do I look for recipes that work? The same place as everyone else ...recipe books and
food magazines.
The books I am recommending are ones I have found very helpful, starting with basics and then on to some that serve a specific need.
Each of the books on this page is rated "4-5 Stars" by people with vastly different skill levels and cooking needs.
Many of the recipes found in the books on this page have been "tested" and approved by restaurant customers. These books have recipes for "real people." Betty Crocker's Cooking Basics : Learning to Cook with Confidence (Betty Crocker) (Spiral-bound) If you or someone you know needs a cookbook that explains pretty much everything, this is one to seriously consider. Every recipe has photos with it which makes it easy to follow the directions. It has a variety of quality recipes for full meals and well as appetizers, side dishes and desserts. And because the book is spiral-bound, it sits flat making it very user friendly.
Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook: The Original 1950 Classic (Betty Crocker) (Ring-bound) One of the great American cookbooks. I was really happy to see this book come out in a new edition. The copy I inherited from my mother had fallen apart from use. This really is a cooking class in a book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in getting started cooking.

How To Break An Egg: The editors of Fine Cooking Magazine compiled a troubleshooting guide for home cooks and its a good one. An extremely valuable guide to assist the home cook.
The Way to Cook (Hardcover), by Julia Child "The Way to Cook" is one of a few books I use regularly to cook. It is kind of a cooking course, a collection of good classic recipes and a reference manual on food all in one place. If you are serious about cooking, get this book.
Cheap, Fast, GoodA modern-day, "practical" cookbook for busy people on a budget, but don't let the title fool you. This really is a wonderful, well-written book with 275 easy-to-make nutritious and delicious recipes. It contains shopping and storage advice, cooking tips, hints for entertaining and feeding kids. A fabulous gift for college students, newly weds, and for families.
The One-Armed CookThe One-Armed Cook is a great gift for new parents, but you don't have to be a new parent to find this book handy. I am delighted I purchased a copy of this clever book. The recipes are original and excellent, and the instructions are in step-by-step order making them easy to follow.
The Best Recipes in the WorldI purchased this book by Mark Bittman to help me expand my knowledge and cooking skills of international dishes. If you want new ideas for foods to cook, this is a good source. The recipes can be "handled" easily by the average cook and will give you a taste of ethnic foods at home.
